My Personal Fitness Journey
I remember the day like it was yesterday. I was 13 years old with a video game addiction. After sitting behind a computer screen, drinking dozens of sugary sodas (pop as I called it then), staying up for long hours. I found myself falling back into a chair seizing up uncontrollably for what my father described to feel like minutes. I had a full blown seizure, something I have never experienced, and it was a huge wake up call. Up until then I lived my life treating my body as if I had a dozen others ready for when mine failed. I lived on a diet that now surprises me that I did not have multiple episodes like the one described above. I had minimal physical activity, and even less restful sleep. After this experience I decided it was time to take my own health and wellness seriously.
My diet was the one thing I knew I could change right then and there. Yes, I may have had a household that did not want to live the same way I did, but I found a way to make it happen. I resisted the things that I knew, or learned, that would hurt me more than they would help me. I started cooking my own meals. I started eating more fruits and vegetables, and I got rid of anything I felt was hindering me. Was it easy? Absolutely not! But, I knew that if I wanted a better future, these things had to change. Was it perfect? Not even close. I missed my nutrition on so many marks at the time, but it was better than it was before. From these small changes, I was feeling more energetic, happy, rested, and motivated. The next step is what changed the trajectory of my life.
I was a quiet kid that really didn’t fit in at school. I had no hobbies or passions to speak of, and I didn’t have a great group of friends at the time. This all changed when I reluctantly joined the weight lifting class when I was told I had to take a PE class in my freshman year of high school. On my first day I nearly threw up, passed out, and killed myself under a barbell. Something in me told me to keep going, to keep trying, to stick with it; which was not my usual character during this stage of my life. I followed through with this and as I started to notice the physical changes on my body, I was addicted. I loved the rush, the soreness, the challenge, and overall how I felt internally compared to the episode I had when I was 13. This experience is what catapulted me into the fitness industry in the first place. My shift to start focusing on a more holistic approach, a minimal effective dose approach, a more conducive approach to training for life happened years later.
I was 21 and shredded… At this stage of my life I was solely focused on bodybuilding and looking a particular way. I was getting prepared for a bodybuilding show and just a few weeks out. Over the years I started to again drift away from feeling good, and now I was focused on looking good. I was taking diet pills, supplements, and things I had no idea what it would do to my body. One morning I found myself face down on the floor in my bathroom with my hand in the toilet, and one of my legs in the shower with a partially torn muscle in my hip. I had passed out. I was so focused on the external that I once again forgot about the internal, about feeling good, and treating my body with respect. I decided then it was time to stop focusing on looking good, but to focus on training for overall well being. I started focusing on moving better because I hurt all over from training so hard. I started focusing on minimal effective dose to limit over training and to stimulate my body just the right amount. I started to focus on stretching techniques that I learned from other coaches and trainers. From this point until now, this has been my main focus. To move well and to be well; and I have never felt better. Now with my education and experience in so many different realms, I have an opportunity to pass on my knowledge and wisdom gained over the years in this industry to all who seek a healthy lifestyle.
This is who I am. I have seen the highs and lows of health and wellness. I have been in the hospital for things I could have prevented; but I have also had the pleasure of experiencing what it feels like to be truly well. My goal in life is to share this wonderful feeling with as many people as I possibly can. To truly feel healthy both physically and mentally is a true blessing. I feel everyone deserves to experience it no matter where you are in life.
